With hay and haylage having to go further in the UK this winter thanks to poor harvest yields, you might want to consider diluting your horse’s forage with a good-quality feed straw if your four-legged friend is a good-doer or prone to weight gain. It’s a really good way to keep them occupied for longer without the extra calories. It’s also less expensive than hay. Our barley straw is designed specifically for this use, and comes in the same handy-sized wrapped bales as our other forage products.
Tips
- Make sure that the straw is good quality – try our EH Barley Straw!
- Introduce gradually, mixing a few handfuls with the hay to start with and increasing over a couple of weeks. Straw can safely make up to a maximum 50% of your horse or pony’s forage over time.
- Feed straw is not recommended for horses with poor teeth or that are prone to colic.
