Cold weather & colic: what you need to know when the temperature drops

It’s bitterly cold out, and that matters for your horse’s gut! ❄️

During cold snaps, colic cases often rise. Why? Horses tend to drink less, move less, and spend longer stabled – all of which slow digestion. This is where forage becomes critical.

Forage is your horse’s first line of defence!
A constant supply of good-quality forage:
• Keeps the gut moving
• Produces vital body heat
• Helps reduce impaction risk
• Supports hydration when water intake drops.

In winter, more forage and less concentrate is key. Long-stem fibre keeps the digestive system working as it should, even in freezing temperatures.

Don’t forget hydration 💧
Cold water puts horses off drinking. Check buckets regularly, break ice, and consider soaked forage or feeds to boost moisture intake.

Watch for early warning signs ⚠️
Reduced appetite or droppings, less drinking, lethargy, or behaviour that “just isn’t right” should never be ignored. Early action can prevent serious problems.
